Though they rarely reach weights anywhere as large as the Humboldt Squid that are caught in the Sea Of Cortez witch at times can be well over 50 lbs. in weight there’re still a lot of fun to catch. Most of the ones caught here are 2 to 10 lbs. and even though they are messy to catch they are great fun and great eating. The tackle needed is simple a fairly stiff rod 20 to 30 lb. test a squid jig either a florescent or lighted ones work best. Squid are very aggressive and if the skipper finds them and get them to the lights it can become a wild and fun time. Words of caution, squid have a parrot like beak and are able to give you nasty bite, they also have a row of teeth that circle the suckers and on the larger ones will leave a nasty cut. Large squid squirt ink and water just like their smaller cousins but in much larger amounts so dress accordingly. If you are one who likes to eat calamari you are going to enjoy these as much as the smaller ones. One final note when you here of the squid being caught go fishing ASAP because the window to catch them may only be open a few days and at most a week or two.
