Using Livelier Bait Using live fish as bait for other predatory fish that strike on impulse requires some attention to details. The time spent at the bait tank may not be fun but can make the difference between getting bit and going home without dinner. Always take the time to look for a healthy swimmer. Anchovies and sardines with missing scales and blood spots on their nose or bodies are not healthy and try to avoid using them. Handle the bait as little and as gently as possible. Take special care when hooking the bait so as not to crush it. Livelier bait swims farther and attracts more attention than a weaker one and thus gives you a better chance to be successful.
