When fishing the west coast it is always important to have an idea of what fish you will want to target at that time of year. When getting ready to deep sea fish always check the recent fishing information for the landing you are planning to fish from don’t be afraid to call them and ask types of fish and tackle to use.YellowfinTuna---- June thru October when water temps are 68 degrees or higher. Most are found under kelp or schools of dolphin or located by trolling tuna feathers. Once found bait and jigs both work.Albacore Tuna---- May thru September with water temperatures 63 to 67 degrees. Most are found by trolling tuna feathers and once found bait or jigs.Bluefin Tuna---- May thru September with water temps around the same as Albacore Bluefin are either visually sited or metered, Bluefin will at times show with or be attracted to Albacore feeding on chum. Live bait is best.Dorado---- August thru November when water temps reach 70 or more. Trolled feathers and live bait.Halibut---- Can be caught year round with spring and fall best. Most are caught on bait but jigs can be effective.Barracuda---- Best June thru September but possible year round Iron jigs are very effective with bait good.Sandbass---- March thru August cut bait, live bait and swim baits all working well.Calico {Kelp Bass} Bass---- Warmer month’s best but can be fished year round with most types of bait and swim baits working well.White Seabass---- March thru July best but possible year round, most are caught on live or fresh dead squid but may also be caught on jigs and finbait.Bonito---- Spring to fall with bait best fallowed by small jigs.Sheephead---- Year round with cut baits such as squid clams and mussels working best.Rockcod {rockfish} Year round with bait and jigs both working.
