Strange But True By Carl Dodd The more hours spent on the ocean deep sea fishing the more apt you are to see strange things happen. Last year while deep sea fishing about 2 miles off the end of San Clemente Island for rock cod a fishing fried of mine dropped a small blue and white lead jig to the bottom and while bringing the fish he had hooked to the surface lost the jig and fish to a sea lion . Anyone who has fished around sea lions has experienced the same frustration of losing a good fish and rig but what followed was strange and we could not come up with an answer for it. Several hours later while bait fishing in the kelp several miles from the lost jig the same angler hooked a nice calico bass and while bringing it to the boat had a Harbor Seal grab it and after a fight in witch he pulled the fish from the seals mouth only to have him grab it again he eventually retrieved the calico bass along with a bunch of loose line. We pulled in the line to dispose of it and attached was a brand new blue and white jig like the on lost. Not believing it could be the same one we checked the line and it was the same brand and test so we then checked the knot and it was a double line spider hitch with a San Diego jam knot but the clincher the price sticker was still on the jig from where he had purchased the jig. All this was witnessed by the crew and skipper of the Tracer Sport fishing boat. So somehow the jig went from a fish to a sea lion to a harbor seal to and back to its owner over several miles and hours.
