Skip Jigging The Surface Surface bites are exciting! Watching the water erupt with the powerful burst of a creature bend on inhaling your lure is awesome That explosive moment of impact is nothing short of incredible. Skip jig fishing is the saltwater method of utilizing a jig to entice a predator, especially yellowfin tuna, by creating an erratic surface “skipping” action in the lure. A rod of at least 8 ft. in length should be matched with a high speed reel. With a gear ratio of at least 4 to 1, the reel should be battle ready and spooled up with 40 to 50 pound test.Chrome jigs such as the Iron Man #3, the Tady 9, and the Tady AA heavy are all terrific choices. With windy conditions, try the heavier Iron Man #5 or the Salas 5X. When the tuna are active on the surface it’s time to try this awesome technique. Cast your jig as far as possible, keep the rod tip up high in the air and start winding the moment the jig hits the water. Get the jig to dance and “skip” erratically…and “hang on!”
